Comparing Different Types of Driveway Pavement

Posted on September 27, 2017 in Uncategorized

When work needs to be done on the exterior of your garage, including your driveway, you may find yourself having a hard time trying to decide what type of pavement to invest in. Cost, durability, and décor are factors that are considered when making this important decision. One size does not fit all; not everyone will want to spend so much money on pavers, and many others will not want their driveway to look simplistic with basic asphalt. All three types of pavement described below are good for driveways, but the perfect selection depends on several different factors and your own personal preferences.

Asphalt Pavement

Asphalt is the least expensive type of pavement. The average cost per square foot to resurface an asphalt driveway is $2.24, which makes this the option with the lowest cost. Even though asphalt is the least decorative of the three types of pavement, some advantages of asphalt pavement include:

  • The ease of removing snow in colder temperatures
  • Good economy
  • Great durability
  • Safety
  • Recyclability

Stamped Concrete Pavement

Choosing the best driveway material truly depends on your budget. Stamped concrete provides a high quality option without being too costly. The initial cost of stamped concrete pavement installment can range between $6 and $15 per square foot. Stamped concrete is more expensive than asphalt, but the advantages of having a stamped pavement driveway include:

  • Less maintenance
  • Longer durability
  • Increased property value of the home

Pavers

Of the three types of driveway pavement, pavers are the most expensive. This option is the most decorative type of pavement, and it allows a homeowner to have a more high-end look while paying more for the display. Types of pavers include:

  • Red or gray brick pavers, which typically cost between $0.50 and $10 per brick
  • Dry laid brick pavers, typically costing $18 per square foot
  • Clay bricks, costing between $300 and $700 per pallet (each pallet equates to 56 square feet, making the cost per square foot between $5.35 and $12.50)
