How to Finish Your Chicago Area Garage

Posted on January 27, 2023 in Custom Garages

As we continue through this new year and as many of us are reinventing ourselves, it is also a good time to reinvent our living spaces –– including our garages. We have given you ideas on transforming your garage into unique spaces for work or projects. But what if you are not looking to use your garage as a personal gym or home office? Blue Sky Builders, Inc. is here to show you how you can transform your garage into a brand-new space without changing its purpose.

What Does a ‘Finished' Garage Mean?

Though garages are often overlooked when it comes to home renovation, it can make a world of difference to finish a garage. What a ‘finished' garage means can be entirely dependent on your preferences. Most of the time the remodels would include:

  • New Flooring
  • Dry Wall
  • Added Lighting
  • New Organization
  • New Doors
  • Heating and Air Conditioning
  • Plumbing

Not all of these options are necessary to finish a garage, but all of them are popular options associated with the process.

What to Do with the Floors and Walls?

The main two options, new flooring, and walls can make a world of difference all on their own.

Most garages will feature a basic concrete floor. If you plan to use your garage more traditionally for cars and storage, then keeping a concrete floor is most likely the best option. However, this does not mean you are stuck with the warehouse look of an unfinished concrete slab. There are plenty of ways to finish concrete flooring. Make sure you fill in any potential cracks in the concrete with an epoxy-based filler. After you have filled in the cracks you can apply a latex-based paint or apply an epoxy coating onto the entire floor. Epoxy, unlike paint, will bond to the concrete and last longer.

The walls of most garages are built leaving an exposed basic frame or having basic wall coverings. Upgrading the walls is an easy fix to transform the garage quickly. Most finished garages have drywall installed, which can be customized and treated however you want. You could paint, decorate, or apply paneling to the wall.

Another cost-effective option is installing plywood panels that can be attached directly to the frame. This is a great idea if you are also looking into implementing new organizational tools in the garage. You can attach new systems of shelving or cabinets onto the walls to suit your needs. Just be aware to finish any electrical or plumbing you may also be running to the garage for this project before putting up the new walls.
